And how about the U.S.??

Yeah, a friend in NYC saw it and said it was amazing. I'd love to hear some news about release dates in the states.

...not only the movie is pretty good, I can't wait to hear the soundtrack, too. I'll have to check some news about this... :-) John & all, congrats to the Sundance thing, keep up the good work.

Ondřej: I've heard it's supposed to be on the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

Any chance we can get the Czech translations of what was said.

Id be interested to know what she said in the scene where he asks her what the Czech for Ocean was. We think we know what she said, but we'd just like to know.

Fantastic movie. Simple story. Great music. OST doesnt seem to be out yet, but some of the songs are available on 'The Swell Season' CD via iTunes, Amazon etc.

anyone know when or if it might be getting a U.K. release? I'd love to see it..

Amazing film... was part of the Philadelphia Film Festival.... any chance of a soundtrack I wonder?

Fionán said...

The film blew me away. My other half, who is Czech, was crying for 15 minutes afterwards. No one left at the end. I wanted to ask them to play it again. Where can I get that soundtrack?

Ian she said "miluju tebe". You can find the translation yourself as it might spoil the film for others reading this.

Well done, went to see it last night, excellent story, music, and filming, slightly disturbing was the handicam quality images, but did not taint the finished product. Went home and downloaded some of the songs from itunes, would like to eventually get soundtrack album and dvd.

Gorgeous film! Have seen it twice now at two different film festivals and I hear Fox Searchlight has picked it up in the US with the intent to release in early June.

From the mouth of Glen Hansard at a recent show, they will also be "properly" releasing the soundtrack this summer.

Tell all your friends to see this movie. Seriously. :-)

We saw it Tues. night in LA, and loved it! What a beautiful film. I keep singing the music. The acting, the style, the committment to naturalism...created a film that captures the truth of humanity and allows the audience a real experience. thank you!

Powerful. Stunning. Unique. I'm looking for the words to describe the experience but not having much luck. Spellbinding.

Of course this would never happen, but a major U.S. underground push, all major cities and smaller indie theatres, would be phenomenal. I've loved what I've seen and frankly, being American...and living in movie purgatory (virginia) ...don't want to wait

Was lucky enough to see the premier at Sundance and afterwords John and Marketa played a song on stage at the Egyptian - magical! The movie is truly special and I really appreciated that it was an adult love story.

Along the same lines we saw Away from Her at Sundance and it also was very moving. It is also out now in limited release.

I saw the film last night, and thought it was adorable. The images of the girl walking on the streets of Dublin dragging the hoover are a gem. No need to say that the music steals your heart from the very first tune. Nevertheless, I have a couple of questions that would appreciate someone clarified for me. English is not my mother language, and during the last two scenes I lost a lot of what the characters said in the dialogues. 1) Where did the boy get the money from to buy the piano for the girl? 2) What was really the end of the story? Is it assumable that the boy was coming back to her on the bus that stopped by the girl's house at the very end? I'm sure this was all clear for the English-speaking audience, since most likely the clues were in the dialogues. Could someone answer these questions for me? Thanks! I am pretty sure this movie will become a cult film for our generation, and that its images will linger in our hearts for a long time.

JV said...

Ruairi, the song she sings walking at night is "If You Want Me" and it's on the soundtrack album. Jhyemee, the song he sings in the beginning is "Say It To Me," from the album Fitzcarraldo by The Frames (Glenn Hansard's band).

Unknown said...

The sound track is avaliable now in HMV! i bought one alr, and it's wonderful!

REGINA said...

Brilliant movie ! Saw in NYC on Friday night - couldn't believe the theatre was almost sold out! Heard about it on BBC news. Maria asked a few questions before I'd like to put my two cent in if you guys don't mind.I don't think there was anything "lost in translation" at the end of the film to be honest.
It isn't said how he gets the money for the piano - and I LOVE that! Also, in my opinion, the bus is actually dropping off her husband (my observation only).
As far as what the end of the story is, I think it's left up to us to ponder - which is another wonderful aspect of this movie. It's so simple, it's brilliant.
Ran out and bought the soundtrack IMMEDIATELY - and I'm going to Ireland in October so this was a wonderful introduction for me.

Unknown said...

saw once last week.

will be going to see it again. it was amazing. yes, i cried. yes, i bought the soundtrack. yes, i have had the soundtrck on repeat for days. and i hope they make a sequel, even though technically that would ruin the entire thing. but i wanted MORE.

she says to him in czech - miluju tebe- i found the translation on a powerpoint of czech translations on-line titled "Lidové noviny". 3 or 4th slide.

it pops up when you google search "miluju tebe translate"

sigh.

I watched the film last night
and i was struck by the fact that
when I was sitting in my office today
the songs
And the every increasing intensity
Of the melodies
were like an emotional memory

like i made love last night

i went to the website to listen to the songs
but my work distracted me
and that wasn't fair to the music
so i am saving them
for when i can focus

Thank you for making the film john carney et al

I saw Once at Sundance this year. It was amazing and the music was extraordinary. When will it come to the U.S. again?

Unknown said...

Hi I am a musician from NY and on my spare few hours yesterday saw this movie by chance (because it was playing at that specific time). I never heard of it before and I have to say that this film has been the best cinematic experience I have ever experienced. I googled reviews obsessively after watching it and found some amazing ones but consistantly felt that even the best review could not describe this artistic genious. It is rare to be moved and touched to such an extent by any artform , unfortunately art isnt always so amazing especially nowadays. sometimes it is great that it actually only comes around a handful of times but those handful of times are worth every bad movie you have seen or every boring book you have read.
I thank you Mr. Carney and everyone that had anything to do with this film.

Star Taylor said...

To be honest, I'd not heard of this movie until Gary Cogill, Movie Critic with WFAA Ch 8 in Dallas TX gave a glowing review. I was compelled to see it.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! It was a beautiful movie with substance and a great message about normal people with dreams. The music haunts me still....

I seen it in Harvard Square MA on Sunday afternoon and enjoyed it very much especially the Dublin street scenes. When the girl walks back from the shop singing I recognized it to be Fitzgibbon street which I grew up on during the sixtys. The square looks the same. Thanks Mr Carney

I saw the film at our local art theater house. It was of course wonderful. But after navigating your movie website and hearing the snippets of the songs I could not find any reference to where or how to buy the soundtrack. Surely the soundtrack is for sale. If not, you are missing out on a tremendous and obvious link with the film. It shouldn't have to be hard to find it. Make a link from your website to where to buy it.

when will it be on its way to australia???

Thank you for your film! My wife and I just watched it here in Austin. It was truly brilliant. I remarked to my wife, "You leave a film like this and you feel...I don't know...for lack of a better word, 'healed'."

Thanks for the healing.

I just saw this movie here in Palo Alto, CA. It was fantastic. I felt "how wonderful it is to be an artist" and be able to express yourself. I was really sad at the end. I'd like to see the movie again, but I'd like the ending to be a little happier so I don't come out of the movie theater feeling so sad. Thank you very much.

I'm from Belfast but now live in DC. I saw Once at a small cinema on Friday night...and loved it. I came out of it not wanting to speak to anyone around me, so I could stay in their little world.
The next morning I bought the soundtrack. I've been humming along to it ever since.

Otto said...

Saw it in DC Saturday night. A beautiful little movie. Simple, lovely and fundamentally moral. It is rare to see such a portrait of two people trying to do the right thing in such a human light. The directing ranges from rough hewn to very grand as the movie progresses, but it throughout affecting. My wife and I are going to see again, this time accomapanied by my two sons.
Oh yeah, the soundtrack is tremendous, released on CD and vinyl (oh yeah). Otto

Thanks to all involved, and especially Glen and Marketa, for a wonderful film. I saw Once here in Boston, and immediately went home and bought the soundtrack. I'd love to find other music by Marketa Irglova -- I encourage you folks to collaborate again in the future; your chemistry is amazing.

One question: does anyone know the chorus to "if you want me"? I can't quite make out the second half...

All the best.

Since I saw this movie on Sunday in Dallas, I have been unable to think about anything else. I sing the songs, I visit the website, I dream...Once has become a part of me. I'm finding it nearly impossible to describe it to anyone I know, so I am grateful for this forum where I have discovered I am not alone.

Great film -- the best that I've seen all year and really enjoyed the music and the actors. I will definitely have to get the soundtrack (coincidentally, we had just received The Commitments on Netflix the day prior to seeing this film).

Opening night at the Maui Film Festival didn't disappoint. I saw Once, an amazingly organic, sweet, tender film. Before Once, music has never narrated a film so brilliantly, so creatively, so beautifully ... MAHALO!!

Margine said...

I loved this movie. It didn't take the easy path, boy meets girl, boy gets girl, but rather showed a love that moved both of the characters forward in their lives and got them unstuck. This was the most romantic movie.

Beautiful film & music!

Cycleslow said...

It is a beautiful movie, it makes the album "The Swell Season" that much better, but I agree with the desire for a seperate soundtrack.
The scenes with the Irish coast-line and market-square are almost worth the price of a ticket alone.
This is a must see movie for anyone who likes the Frames, Ireland, Czech, or Hoover vacuums.

What was the song that she sang at the piano in the recording studio? The one that she wrote but didn't finish? I couldn't find it on the soundtrack. Help!

Nitsujcm said...

Just watched it in Dallas tx. awesome.

RossK said...

Me, I'm with lots of folks above.

The other thing I enjoyed very much was the concept of a truly seamless musical where, once they are set in motion, the songs become the story (and the place where the love blooms and will never end).

I can only wonder if the shaggy-dog engineer's comment at the end of the recording session about the fact that he was 'just twisting the knobs' was actually a wee tip of the sly irony hat from Mr. Carney.

.

Fantastic! I've seen this move three times and each time gets better! Good job at directing, acting, songwriting...all around brillant and authentic! Please come and tour in the U.S. Mr Hansard and Miss Irglova! Austin, Tx (live music capital of the U.S.) is awaiting you. I'll be your tour guide!

Press on!

i would have stayed and watched Once again if it started back up after the credits rolled. it was that good. i walked the three blocks home from the theater in Santa Monica, CA, and i was crying large tears the whole walk. i don't even consider the film a tearjerker, but it just got me...very cathartic.

Hey, I have a few questions:

1) Is this still being performed as a musical? If so, where can I get more information?

2) Will Once be produced and sold? If so, where/when can I get a copy?

If you have any answers for me, please feel free to contact me via my e-mail marshall.zach@gmail.com or by leaving a comment on my (very under construction blog) http://www.zachmarshall.blogspot.com

My wife and I disagreed about who bought the piano for Marketa? Was it Marketa's husband or was it Glen? The piano in Marketa's apartment was an old, ornate upright unlike the pianos on display in the music store. What, exactly, did Glen say to the music store owner? We had trouble hearing the dialogue.

I just saw it last night... I went through a break up recently, and though I didn't want to cry at the theater, I did afterwards. This just makes me want to reconcile with my ex girlfriend that much more. The gift these people have to convey love in such a powerful and organic and emotional way is truly amazing. In all sincerity this has to be one of the best movies I have ever seen... Thanks for the experience.

Unknown said...

Great movie. If you haven't seen it or read any of the comments above, than what I'm about to say may be a SPOILER!

The Guy used the money his dad gave him to buy the piano for the Girl. During the scene where the Guy's playing his finished songs for his father, the father says he'd saved away and had "a few hundred quid" to give to him, presumably to get settled in London.

As for the bus at the end...never even noticed it. My interpretation was that the Guy went off to London to see what the great beyond had in store for him, and the Girl's husband had come Ireland to be with her and their family.

It was a perfect ending.

Unknown said...

People should send you guys roses, bread and honey at your feet for making this film. The way it feels, the acting, singing and filmmaking are an inspiration for all to follow a true passion, an idea, a plan...Thanks guys for making this film.

Congratulations to John Carney, Writer & Director of "Once", for an absolutely brilliant film. A standing ovation for actors Glen Hasard and Marketa Irglova. You moved me emotionally watching this beautiful story unfold.
One of my best friends, Wendy Browder, brought me to see this movie on Tuesday, July 3, 2007 in New York and we both left the theatre wiping our tears away. This movie was touching and a true story of how dreams can become a reality with hardwork, commitment and loyalty from friends & family. I am forever grateful to my friend-Wendy for introducing me to this movie. I just purchased the "Once" CD & another one of "The Frames" CD on Amazon. I also just purchased "The Frames" poster. I love their music. Lots of Luck to "The Frames" and to the people involved producing the movie "Once".

This movie is awesome. The music is ethereal. The story is made when the girl contacts her husband to come join her (with ending scenes of him in the apartment with the baby) and the guy calls his girlfriend to say he's coming to London and she is glad he is coming. These two people had places in their hearts healed by their shared experiences with the music. The ending is poignant and brilliant.

Beautiful. Saw the movie last night. Loved the music and also loved the ambiguous ending. I too noticed the bus. I hadn't asked myself who bought the piano. I assumed it was the guy based on the music store scene at the end. But yeah, it could've been the husband making an effort.

Marketa, Glen, and John - I want to express my profound gratitude for your beautiful music and film. I am rarely able to feel strong emotions due to a medical issue. I saw the film yesterday, and for the first time in a very long while I found myself crying (during the Falling Slowly scene...and pretty constantly from there). I am going through an extremely difficult time and your art perfectly expressed the feelings I have been unable to access. I was so moved that I attended the next showing. I anticipated an enjoyable escape and instead found catharsis. It is beautiful, tender, melancholy, and ultimately hopeful. I apologize if this is melodramatic, but this work means more to me than I can express. This is the first time in my life that I have written a letter of this nature. Again, I sincerely thank you and I wish you the best. SCB, Austin TX.

A great story, very creative composition and magnificent music in a simple space.

I wrote about it here.

Wow. What can I say? I lived in Dublin from 1999 to 2005. My husband, who's Irish, and I love The Frames and have all of their CDs. This movie is so sweet and full of life. I'm so happy that the world is being introduced to Glen Hansard's brilliance. And I'm so enamored with Marketa; what an amazing combination.

To Tortimom, I bought both the Once soundtrack and The Frames, The Cost, from Amazon before I even saw the movie. So it's available there. Except for Gold, a song by Interference, all of the songs on the soundtrack are mainly written by Glen Hansard. Marketa gets one credit and then they both co-wrote Falling Slowly.

Thank you John Carney, Glen, and Marketa for creating a wonderful film. It's an inspirational piece of work.

Please say this movie will be out on DVD soon. The film has finished its run here in Calgary and I still want to see it again!

To John, Glen, Mar: Thank you for making this movie. I just saw today it in the Auckland Film Festival. Before the movie started, the lady beside me said that if I didn't like the movie, I shouldn't tell her--because she's Irish. I told her that I've been looking forward to this movie since I saw the trailer.

I'm a huge fan of Before Sunrise, and Once ranks up there as one of the best love stories. Your movie is amazing, and your music is beyond amazing. When I came out of the Civic Theatre, I was humming "If You Want Me" all the way to the bus stop, thankful, ever thankful for the experience.

I saw the movie last weekend and just adored it. Usually if a movie is going to make me cry, it's because the characters have been well developed, then something happens to character, and because I am connected, I get weepy. With this movie, it was the actual character development itself that had me all choked up.

It's just a precious moment in life when you meet someone who "gets you", and this movie captures that magically and powerfully.

Thanks so much.
PS...bought the soundtrack last night, and that got me crying too LOL

Hi, we've (meaning me and my wife) seen the movie a few days ago in a small theater - actually a "screening room" in Newburyport MA. Thank you for a wonderful experience. This is a great film from many points of view. We've purchased the soundtrack right away (well, the day after) and we'll probably buy the DVD, too. Also, I'll have the movie checked out by my students, too (I teach American Literature, but who cares), forcefully, if necessary :-)
They're young, they need a movie like this.

I have loved what we refer to here in America as "foreign" films since I first became aware of them in the late '60's (A Man and a Woman). I've seen a ton of them and over the past 37 years have nearly convinced my wife they are better than Hollywood hype-cinema, by far; our Netflix queue is full of them. Thank you for ONCE, it almost seems like after viewing it here in Kennewick, Washington, this afternoon that I have come full circle: back to "A Man and a Woman" only this time lovingly told with beautiful, hearfelt music, and Dublin. Wow...when is the cd coming out?

Any ideas where this may be being shown in the UK?

Just saw it at the Brooklyn Academy of Music Cinemas here in New York.

Thanks for making something so true!

More specifically, thanks for not making any villains --from the thief in the opening scene, to the male character's father, to both characters' exes, to the recording engineer-- I'm glad you had the maturity to refrain from making any of them antagonists in your story.

Also, I found it refreshing and more ...moving... that the characters did not court each other with words, but with music. Romantic indie movies sometimes have a lot of extremely articulate, fast-paced dialogue. It's not a bad thing by any means, but, well, it is a million times easier to fall in love with musicians than with writers, no? :)

So, accordingly, I totally fell in love with both of the characters in the movie. Moreover, I was also smitten by the quality of light in the film at different times of day, the texture, rather than the text, of the movie.

I am so glad that I went to see this movie by myself*, because I certainly did not want to talk to anybody after seeing it. I wanted to stay in the last shots of the movie, on her street, watching men unload a piano at one end, and a bus driving towards the airport on the other.

*The only other movie I've gone out to see by myself was, inexplicably, Shrek, and that...wasn't as good an idea. There's nothing as suspicious as a grown-up sitting self-consciously in the back of a crowded theatre for a children's movie.

stephnzmh said...

I really loved the movie... I came in expecting a movie about nothing but love and music and got so much more with what little were give... I loved how we learn to feel so much for the characters and yet we don't even know their names or likewise (they didn't know each others...)

Will this be released to DVD soon? Would LOVE to see it again.

O my gods! I loved this movie, it was sooo honest and real. I loved the actors. Thank you very much for making it!

Unknown said...

I saw the movie about two months ago. As with everyone who has posted here, it is a magical experience.

The only reason for my post is the hope that someone responsible for such decisions will note the growing demand for a DVD. I cannot find any indication that a DVD is planned. What else can we do to make sure that a DVD is produced? Ok, so maybe you will only sell 50,000 copies, not 500,000.

Please, please make this wonderful film available.

Thank you.

I really loved the movie and I so want to buy the sound track. As a songwriter, all I can say is, "about time," for such film about music done with such depth and meaning.

And the website - WOW. I just seen the website and it looks great and done justice for the movie and the songs.

I saw the movie tonight and i bought the cd right away. It was clear after the first song that this movie would be amazing. It has been a very long time that i have been this surprised by a movie or its music. Goose-bumps and tears rolling on my cheeks (a first)... i can't really describe it... I feel like I'm flying! Inspirational! It's that good!

I just wish i could see this live

I took my 16 year old film student son to see this movie ,because it got good press and I read it was made for 160,000 dollars. INCREDIBLE! We were moved and motivated that such a gem could be made for so little. It's so cool that these two are a couple now even though there is an 18 year age difference. Who cares? My husband passed away 6 months ago, and he was a musician. I totally resonated with the story, because they were brought together by music which is how we met. (I just wish I could sing). As soon as we left the theater we bought the soundtrack and have listened to nothing else for 4 days(except my son who is on a Frank Zappa kick). The world needs more movies like this and we will make one someday.

Saw this film in Dublin in April and still think of it almost daily! Dying to see it again. Glen hansard is a true genius who doesn't know how good he really is...has to be seen live to really soak up his unique talent.

I first saw this film in Toronto with my 13 year old daughter and we loved it!! It was so intense and yet so simple. I came home to NY and immediately took my wife to see it. We have bought the soundtrack and cannot wait until it hits DVD so we can share it with even more people. A movie with real emotion and true humanity...and a the best soundtrack ever!!

Greg Donovan said...

The film was sensitive, accurate, fine-tuned, bittersweet, entirely memorable and affecting. I play music--including having played some in the UK among semi-pro musicians of several sorts--and the movie got all of that right without slipping towards the phoniness so many filmmakers or actors would stumble into. The love story, like the music, was delightful and pointed, hopeful and sad at the same time.

Unknown said...

is there any way to buy the soundtrack of this movie ? this movie was amazing !!

everton said...

We just saw this film in Liverpool with Glen and Marketa doing a q&a and some songs afterwards.
It was fabulous.
Given the recent negativity towards eastern European immigrants in the UK it was refreshing to see such positive images.
This is a love story for today where music is a common language and what beautiful music.

Hi There,
I just saw it last night in Toronto at the Bloor Street Cinema. It was absolutely amazing, I really enjoyed the storyline. Being a musician myself it was nice to see a film that kept the whole struggling musician thing a reality. Also, the music was brilliant and I would love to buy the soundtrack. Otherwise, I'll just have to keep coming to the site to listen! Ha! :)

Congrats on an emtionally satisfying film. So beautiful...

The music is perfect and timeless. The genre is unique and charming. This Once is my 2007 favorite.

Betsy said...

When will it be available on video in the US?

tingting said...

When how you think, remember, and live is through music...
when a tune refuses to let you go, and the only words you can get at any instance are lyrics from a song that come back to you...

"once" continues to haunt and intoxicate me.
I'm left struggling to find apt adjectives...so, instead,
thank you.

It's a very good film. felicitation.

Wow. I saw this movie while flying back to the US from Australia. This caught me by surprise...especially the music. I loved the "Falling Slowly" and the recording of "When your mind's made up" scenes. So touching. I loved seeing the recording engineer's face change expressions when the drum beat came in. Damn straight these guys have talent. I already bought a few tracks from Amazon and will be getting the DVD when it's released. What a fantastic movie.

Just amazing, I saw it in Paris and I am still under the chock... So beautiful... And the music too, I can't wait to get the music score, do you know if it will be available in the future?

Thanks for this great moment!

This past week I was flying from Victoria to Ottawa, Canada and 'ONCE' was one of the options on the seat-back entertainment unit with Air Canada. I was captivated by your film. Hi! This is Francesc, from Barcelona. "Once" has landed in Spain two weeks ago, I've seen It twice and next weekend I'll go again. I'm a crazy movie buff and “Once” is the best that I've seen in years!. Serious!! It's got me completely obsessed. I have never been so deeply touched by a movie. When I got home, I took my guitar and began to play by ear "Falling slowly". I cross the streets sighing "If you love me, satisfy me", "When your mind's made up", "You must have fallen from the sky" and so on. I encourage everybody to go and see this film. When it ended, I couldn't stand up from the chair. The way the songs braid with the story is absolutely unbelievable, and a prodigy of sensibility I've rarely seen in a movie, and never this way. Don't miss it!! 1.000.000 thanks to John, Glen, Marketa and all involved.

Hola! Cruzo las calles susurrando "If you love me, satisfy me", "When your mind’s made up", "You must have fallen from the sky" y las demás.

I just rented the movie this past weekend. Truly beautiful. I really just wanted to watch it over again immediately. I listened to the soundtrack repeatedly today and I wish I was in a spot to continue doing so right now. It gives me chills just thinking about it. Raw and emotional. I just got one of The Frames albums but I certainly plan on checking out all of the rest of their music. It is one of those beautiful things you want to share with EVERYONE!!
